Atheras
Atheras is quite a small but traditional mountain village with approximately 200 people residing there. Located high in the western corner of Paliki peninsula of kefalonia. This remote pretty village is surrounded by farmland land, which by in large supports the economy of the village . You will enjoy wonderful panoramic views from the top of the village. Atheras had to be mostly rebuilt after the 1953 earthquake, and the houses display many colourful gardens. One villager has made a pot planter from an old WW2 sea mine.
In the village square there is the beautiful church of Evangelistria, with an elegant gate and bell tower that was built in 1933.
Due to Kefalonia suffering from Earthquakes in the past most bell towers have since been built away from other buildings, this is to prevent the towers falling onto neighbouring buildings during tremors that occur frequently in the Ionian. If you are staying in Atheras and enjoy a peaceful setting but would like to get out and about for a while then car hire would be recommended. The walk down to the beach can be exhausting so remember to take water with you, especially on your return to the village.
