Agrillion Monastery
Agrillion Monastery Kefalonia
High on a hill between Sami and Anti Sami stands the Monastery of Agrillion. It is situated on a hill overlooking the emerald beach of Anti Sami, Sami and the coastline of Ithaca. The wonder of the location is that it is set against the background of Mount Einos, covered with evergreens, which are unique to Kefalonia.
Nearby you can see the remains of the ancient walls of Sami. Built in its grounds on a hill among the olive groves it has its bells hanging from a tree.
The monastery was built in the 18th century on the site where two shepherds Simon and Gabriel along with their maid Pelagia found the miraculous icon of Agios Theotokos in 1722.
After the discovery they decided to become monks and Pelagia a nun. These individuals were the first members of the monastery.
The monastery is dedicated to the Holy Virgin and it is the place where St. Kosmas of Aetolia spent some of his time in Kefalonia.
Lord Byron also stayed here for a short time while living in kefalonia. From Sami to Anti Sami on the right is the turning you need to take to reach the monastery. The signpost may say Kastrro and Monastery.
The road is steep but in relatively good condition, tarmaced most of the way. It supplies fantastic views of the surrounding area. The journey takes about 10 minutes, depending how many goats are also using the road.
On route you will see many goats and a farm. In summer beware of wasps, we encountered a large swarm just as we passed the farm, in an open jeep was a tad worrying.
Once at the monastery you can enjoy the peace and tranquility. Beautiful scenery surrounds you in lovely panoramic views. Inside the grounds the terrain is flat and easy to walk on.
The small building which stands here has glass sections in the door so it is possible to photograph the interior which is lovely like so many of the churches in Kefalonia.
This location is peaceful and not difficult to find. There is a serene atmosphere, which accompanies this site. It is usually very quiet and you may very well be the only visitors.
