Sami is located on the eastern coast of Kefalonia, and is the second
busiest port in Kefalonia Set amongst the most dramatic scenery Kefalonia
offers. Tree clad mountains covered in firs surrounds this busy town.
Sami is the second busiest port on Kefalonia serving ferries to
neighbouring locations of Corfu, Ithaca, Patras and Italy.
Sami was the town hardest hit by the 1953 earthquake.
Sami has a long waterfront, with plenty of tavernas where you can sit in
shade and watch the world go by whilst enjoying a cold drink or having
something to eat.
As you would expect the town offers accommodation in the way of hotels and
apartments.
Sami is of course where most of the filming for Captain Corelli's Mandolin
was made with a replica of old Argostoli built in its main square. It is
quite surreal to sit sipping a drink in the peace and quiet in the same
spot as explosive scenes of the film were shot. Behind the main front area
of the town there are a maze of tightly packed streets with charming
houses and gardens full of flowers in blossom.
Above the modern town lies the ruins of the Ancient city of Sami. Here you
can wander the ruins and explore the site of The Monastery of Agrillion.
You can easily drive up to Ancient Sami or take taxi. At the top you will
be able to take the most fantastic photographs of the whole area. There
are a few good attractions near to Sami, including the Drogaroti Cave,
Lake of Melissani and the small lake of Karavomylos where some of the
subterranean waters of Katavothres in Argostoli finally ends up.
Only 1 Km away is the attractive sandy beach of Karavomilos. This beach is
not necessarily obvious to locate so read your maps carefully. A word of
warning if swimming in this area look out for Sea Urchins, we saw a couple
in 2006. Around the coastline is the stunning bay of Anti Sami in the most
amazing setting. The walk to this beach would be quite lot to endure as
its uphill until the decent into Anti Sami, so transport is an advantage. This
beach was also used in the Corelli film.
If you have transport then along the coast road heading towards Aghia
Efimia there are a peppering of nice coves to choose from. You can usually
find a small cove or sheltered beach which isn't too busy.
