IME the vast majority of accommodation on the Greek Islands has solar heated water (which is why you can never get a warm shower at peak demand). It is generally the modern accommodation which might have gas heated hot water and in all cases I have seen that has been well installed and maintained.
However, I agree it doesn't cost much for a disposable CO detector. They used to be available in sealed packs of two at less than £5 from places like Focus,
B & Q etc. Once opened they are effective for 3 months and if unopened they have a long shelf life. However, one should be aware that there is no alarm and they need to be in place for a while before you can rely on the reading. No good if you set them up a few minutes before going to bed on your first night!

AN HOTEL in Corfu where two children died from carbon monoxide poisoning is reported to have been closed by a Greek government minister.
The Corcyra Hotel had its licence revoked in October when Christi Shepherd, seven, and her brother Bobby, six, from Horbury, near Wakefield, died after gas seeped from a faulty boiler and air-conditioning unit. Last night the children's father Neil Shepherd told the Yorkshire Post: "We are waiting for official confirmation, but as far as we understand that is the case. It should never have been opened in the first place."

The hotel was supposed to remain closed while allegations of negligence were investigated, but had reopened for the Easter break. It is believed that tourism minister Fanny Palli-Petralia ordered it to close yesterday.

    An update from todays paper

    HOTEL REOPENS

Corcyra Beach on Corfu, where children died, is given license back

The Corcyra Beach hotel, where two British children died from suspected gas poisoning last October, will be allowed to reopen after having its license suspended, the Tourism Ministry said yesterday. The ministry had moved in April to temporarily shut down the hotel, in Gouvia on the Ionian island of Corfu, after it was revealed that the establishment was owned by the Louis Group, which also owned the Sea Diamond cruise ship which sank off Santorini. The ministry said that 265 of the hotel’s 373 rooms would be allowed to receive visitors after the company confirmed they had received fire safety certification. The company has not yet asked for an operating license for the remaining 108 rooms.

One of the is still working for Thomas Cook
Thomas Cook holiday deaths Corfu trial:: Greek Courts have postponed the trial of two Thomas Cook holiday reps, who face charges of manslaughter and negligence, over the deaths of a brother and sister while on holiday in Corfu in 2006.
The trial of Richard Carson, 27, and Nicola Gibson, 25, was due to start today but has been delayed until next February or March after deliberate delaying tactics and legal applications by the defendants.
The family of two children gassed to death while on a half-term holiday almost three years ago have described a further delay in the trial against those charged with their deaths as “disrespectful”.
Carson, who still works for Thomas Cook as consumer affairs executive, and Gibson, who left at the end of 2006, face charges of manslaughter and negligence.
Twelve defendants, including two British Thomas Cook reps, were due to be tried.
Christianne Shepherd, seven, and her brother Robert, six, known as Christi and Bobby, died from carbon monoxide poisoning after fumes leaked into their apartment in Corfu in October 2006, while they were on a Thomas Cook holiday.

Our Thomas Cook rep informed us that none of their accommodation should now have gas boilers fitted. She also said that if anyone discovered that their accommodation did have such boilers fitted they were to inform her immediately and alternative accommodation would be sorted straight away.
This incident has certainly spooked Thomas Cook!

I have moved Rich's post, and my reply, to the Travel section as it is of general interest, rather than specific to Corfu.
