It looks wonderful Saffy - thanks for those photos. I always regret we couldn't do the Santorini trip the last time we were on Crete.

Thanks for your replies ... it was a lovely holiday although a part of me missed Kefalonia. Two islands couldn't be so different though!!

It was dark when we finally set off for our resort (Perivolos) and all I could gather from the journey were twisted roads with villages lit up brightly in the distance. The houses looked so different .. little white sugar cubes; houses with no pointy roof tops - the reason for this I was to find out later.

Our accommodation was lovely .. simple and clean with beautiful well kept gardens and a gorgous pool and pool side bar, the latter of which kept open until the last man/woman fell.

Probably about a three minute walk from the beach which wasnt black as expected, rather dark grey, going to black as the "sand" got wet. I was really astonished to see all the white pumice stone to the back of the beaches - mounds and mounds of it, and if you venture into a "field" you would find yourself knee deep in "ash" soil. It really brought home to me that this was a volcanic island.

Loved staying in Perivolos, which is joined to the slightly busier resort of Perissa - we did the walk from one resort; starting at Perivolos and taking a left up to Perissa, most nights. Loads of tavernas .. I don't think that if we went to a different taverna each night for a month, that we would have been to every one. Lots of music bars aswell, that provided daytime "fun" parties and chilled night time sounds.

We found the prices in the tavernas about the same as Kefalonia .. it was only the bars that heaped the prices up to those I had read Santorini demanded - it was the same in the capital, Thira, the prices in the tavernas away from the edge of the caldera were typically Greek - though choose to have a sunset view on one of those on the edge and expect to have the price tripled, and the menu to change from typically Greek to poncey European.

We stayed one night in Thira, at a stunning Hotel hanging onto the edge of the caldera and surrounded by sounds of Santorini .. i.e. donkeys braying and clattering up the cobbled roads on their way home, and the voices of wolrd wide travellers. It was an utter pleasure to be able to sit in the jacuzzi on the beautiful terrace and look out to sea.

We arrived in Thira at around 1pm and boy was it hot! We eventually found out HOtel, but as it is se into the caldera sides had to carry our case (thankfully only a small one for the night) down several twisty little stairs.

Our room had a four poster, full sized fridge, stereo system, tv and complimentary gowns and slippers - Holie had a small room by the side set into the caldera cliff side, as ours was, and with french doors opening onto the tiniest little balcony overlooking the caldera - gorgeous. The bathroom was set into the side, cave like, with a mass of complimentary toiletries.

We decided to walk down to the old harbour and had to pass hundreds - literally hundreds, of hot and smelly donkeys/mules . . . poor things. They looked so hot. It was a case of having to stop and look at the view as your eyes were on the floor all the time you were walking trying to avoid the bigger cobbled stones that could send you flying the donkey doo dar.

Chose the cable car up ... and that was a journey in itself I can tell you .. I never knew they could go up vertically!

Lots more to tell .. but dont want to bore everyone all at once.
