Default Assos..... What do you like about it?

I am a regular visitor to Assos when i visit Kefalonia, i just love the peace and quiet of the place, sitting in one of the tavernas and enjoying a fresh orange juice while people watching and soaking up the atmosphere. Time seems to stand still down here and it seems so much better because there are no coaches fill of tourists able to get in! You seem cut off from the rest of civilization here!
It has to be one of the most beautiful places on the island with the flower decked houses, the fortress (although i STILL haven't tackled that yet) the little harbour and the small beach................ great for swimming as the water is always so calm. The haunting ruins from the earthquake standing among the houses in the village and above all, the stunning views up the coast from the car park area. I could go on and on about Assos. My wife says she could stay here, i'm not so sure. I think i would go "stir crazy" if i had to spend a couple of weeks here but i love to come down for a couple of hours every time i visit the island.
What do you like (or dislike) about Assos?

We only went once, got put off having to walk through all the tavernas tables with people trying to drag us in, perhaps there was another way to go past?
Would like to go again but our hire car doesn't know the way and will only go from Katelios to Scala a couple of times and to Argostoli & Sami once ;D

Don't think there is another way Janey, at least we haven't been down to the waterfront any other way than from the car park. Didn't seem to get any hassle from the restaurants on recent visits though!

We make a trip to Assos every time we visit the Island, sometimes just for a stroll or sometimes we stay for lunch rather than eat in Fiskardo.

There's always the same old guy selling honey from a table in the shaded picnic area (very expensive honey, I think it was 8 euros a jar when we were there last October)

I love the houses, in fact my 2nd favourite house on the island is in Assos. It's the orangey/grey house on the left as you enter the village. It has the most fantastic view from the back of the property. 8-)

We made the trek up to the fortress one Summer when our son was with us. It wasn't too steep 'cos the path takes long winding loops but it was long and we drank loads and loads of water making our way up. It is possible to drive up but that's cheating! :P
Well worth the effort, but won't be trying it again in July!

I think I could spend my hols there....

Assos is great outside of July / August. I think I might chicken out of taking a car up to the fortress. I would also chicken out of walking up there in July/August.

But it is a lovely walk in the Spring and Autumn. The views back over towards the village are superb - but it is a pity about those modern villas/appartment blocks which (fortunately) you can keep out of camera with a little bit of zoom.

There is a superb photo on the front of the Thomsons Greece brochure taken from just off the road on the way to the fortress.

Car parking in the village can be very difficult in July/August.

There's no problem driving a jeep upto the fortress, the problem comes if you want to turn around or worse still meet something coming in the opposite direction. But by foot or vehicle the view is definately worth it especially early evening when the heats disappearing out of the day.
Got to say minus kids i could probably do Assos as a chilled out base for a weeks total relaxation. There's enough tavernas to keep me in Mythos whilst watching the world go by.
Have always been green eyed and wondered who owns a house with a view LIKE THAT...

Got to admit i loved the place . I think it is also known as little Paris as it was the French that had a hand in the rebuilding after the earthquake!!!!!!
I found it just about the most relaxing place on the island .
Beautiful scenery , but must admit to not going up to the castle after seeing Kef,s photo definately going to get up there this year.
You must try bombing down that road into Assos on scooter ,BRILL. [smiley=042.gif] [smiley=003.gif]
