Chris, unfortunately i have nothing from 2004. I had an old Olympus SLR at the time and had constant problems with the film not loading correctly. I lost count of the amount of photos i lost because of this.
I decided to buy my first digital camera the year after that but haven't been able to catch any pictures of storms since. BTW, you have every right to be proud of that last photo!

John, sorry to hear that. With the old film cameras it was hit and miss as you say - most people I know lost so many photos thanks to the clumsy loading film mechanisms of the past. I used to have a Konica camera that drove me mad! I've also lost photos on a digital camera when the memory card failed but it's not too common.

Phil, I was also tempted to buy an Aldi-type camera some years ago at Tescos but after looking into it I decided it wasn't for me! My previous camera was a Fuji 2mp camera like yours. It had a 6x zoom which was great at the time. It took decent photos too.

You are totally right about more megapixels not necessarily resulting in a better image. If you follow the market closely you'll see that the latest bunch of non-SLR cameras are coming out with less megapixels than before. I really like Panasonic Lumix 'bridge' cameras as they are called. They look like an SLR but are cheaper and have a huge zoom range. The FZ150 is their latest model and is simply superb. If you cannot stretch to the £350-£400 price for that you may want to go for its little brother the FZ47 or last year's FZ45 at just under £250. I'll pesonally wait till January and go for the FZ150 when the price drops a little

Where is the nunnery btw? In Kefalonia?

My previous camera was a Fuji 2 megapixel camera which had a viewfinder (very handy in bright sunlight). I am convinced that the old Fuji took better photos because it had a much better lens. I am not convinced that more megapixels means better quality. All the digital cameras we have owned have been scrapped because they seem to consume too much battery power when they get a couple of years old.

I have just dug out a 15 year old Minolta SLR. I haven't used it for 7 years. There is still some film in it and the battery pack is still reading a good state of charge.

Here are a couple of images from August 2000 which have been scanned from 5x4 prints in a very cheap scanner and then reduced to 800 x 600....... (interesting to see how the painting progressed at the nunnery) ..................

Edited to add - I'm definately open to suggestions for a relatively cheap point and shoot camera......... something that I can point and shoot the next time I see a 6 foot snake slithering across the road ...............

I'm tempted to get a bridge camera - a handier size than a SLR.

The photos were taken in the large Ag Gerasimou church. I'm not sure whether the nuns just look after the smaller church above the cave.......
