    Default Best tavernas?

    Hello Kefalonia forumites,

Starting this week I'd like to share useful and fun information about visiting Kefalonia and need you help. What are some of the tavernas you have tried out that offer the best possible combination of service, food quality and value?

I'm going to get the ball rolling with a few tavernas I've had the chance of trying out myself recently.

    - 'Remezzo' in Kounopetra, on the west side. Fantastic atmosphere, fresh food (especially fish) and great service. I had a meal there last night and counted four or five different nationalities. Dutch, Italian, British, Russian as well as some locals. As it's not the easiest place to find I'm sure most customers go there through word of mouth.

    - 'Arhontiko' near the Argostoli square. Run by people with a big smile which is always nice. Great variety on the menu and very reasonable prices. Don't forget to sign the guestbook as you leave!

    - 'Zorba' at the centre of Lixouri on the west side. As recession-proof as it gets. This place is always packed and it's not surprising. Great food, very nice setting and the prices are definitely on the low side. A favourite with the locals which is always a good indicator of quality. Get there early... you've been warned

    - 'Gialos' just metres from Atheras bay on the west side. Great view of the sea, fantastic setting (timber structure, vine leaves.. you get the picture!), great food/fish and nice service. Prices are very reasonable too.

    - 'Nefeli' in Lassi. A firm favourite with the locals and visitors alike. Lots of choice on the menu and run by people who are honest and friendly.

    I could go on...!

Tavernas in Lourdas:- Lorraines Magic Hill. A very warm welcome, great atmosphere and excellent food and wine. It feels like coming home when we go there! Lorraine and her family and staff are complete stars. Our favourite.

Bars:- You won't find a shadier, cooler and friendlier bar than the pool bar at the Ionian Sun. Great cocktails, wine and beers. Well cooked and presented snacks and ice-creams during the day, served by Bell, who has just the right touch and nothing is too much trouble. She has transformed the bar and menu into a little haven from the hot sun. It now has a big TV screen, which has subtitles, so no intrusive sounds to disturb your relaxation. Fantastic BBQ and entertainment on Friday nights.
Muses Cafe Bar. Nadia is the supreme host and Muses feels like the TV bar "Cheers" Great drinks and food, plus good craick until the early hours, with some of the best music on CD. All sporting events shown on big TVs, but wonderful quiet spots to escape to in the gorgeous gardens if that's not your thing. Fun quiz on Monday nights.
Dimitris Beach Bar. perfect for pre-dinner drinks, watching the sunset and the waves. Good snacks served all day too. Cathy and Pete
Set the controls for the heart of the sun.

For us, we find the Scandinavia bar in Skala very friendly, in-expensive and very tasty food, they do a very reasonable Full English for 4.5 euro. The Il Gabbiano in Lassi, Miltos and his family do themselves proud with a fine selection of Italian and Greek food. For a chill in the day, The Makis Yialos Apartments, Lassi, we found this by chance in 2000, we were meeting in-laws who came the day before us and didn't know where they were staying so we suggested the Princess to meet up, another nice bar for swimming and snacks, when we met they took us over to meet Makis, we go there a few times every time we visit, swimming, tennis, pool, darts, football and some very tasty cheap snacks. A lot of the ex-pats meet up here in summer and out of season it's like a local to them. Finally The Pikiona in Skala, a lovely beach bar with in-expensive drinks and snacks by day and superb candlelite meals from a wide ranging menu of a night.

    Hi Bill,

I know we've touched on this before, but a couple of your choices use frozen ingredients in all their dishes. I can get the same tasting authentic 'Greek' food at home myself after a visit to Iceland!
