Question Why is kefalonia so dear to get too???

I am just looking to see what deals i can get later in the year and there are some out there but compared to Corfu, Zante and even Crete another few hundred miles further south the cost to Kefalonia is always more.
Seeing as we know there is plenty of accommodation on the island spare and or relatively cheap it must be the flights causing this additional cost.

If only i had the finance to get a plane i am sure it could be filled most weeks in the Summer if the price was right.

This is something that comes up in conversation many times. I have very rarely seen a really cheap last minute flight from my local airport and i think only once have i seen a flight only for less than £180!
Only the other week, i was checking out last minute flights for the date on which we normally would have travelled and they were still selling at £320......then there was the charges for baggage on top of that!
At the same time, there were flights to Zante selling for £150 less (going the following day!!).
I remember the situation that developed a couple of years ago when someone had a flight organised to Kefalonia and back over the Xmas/New year period. If i remember it was virtually sold out and then the plug was pulled on it for reasons which have been speculated on but never fully explained.
In reality, i think something like this could actually be done, but it would have to be done through a private airline and not a charter airline like we all are used to. Doing it this way, i am not sure wether it would actually save us much money...................although i would certanly be interested in the idea!

There are cheap flights to be had. There are seats available as we speak for last minute departures at between £80 and £110 return all in. You just have to be able to go at a few days notice and have the balls to sit out and wait for the deal to come.
Seats on yesterdays bristol flight were £89 on monday. £356 for a family of 4 for 14 nights. My mate also booked the apartment for 500 euro (cash on arrival) so about 35 a night and was collected at the airport by the owner. Result is a 2 week holiday for a family of 4 in Kef in a 1 bedroom apartment with pool for less than 800 sterling. and thats in the middle of July! The only thing wrong with it......... I'm still here and I was the one who told him about the flight prices.

I agree with cwm ddu. There are cheap flights and packages to be had, but these tend to be either last minute or out of peak season. Also, it is usually a case of knowing where and when to search. Some of the best accommodation is frequently cheaper than some of the basic and *tired* apartments.

Flights and packages to Kefalonia are expensive compared to other destinations. I suspect the main reasons for this are:

    1. A lot of the the UK public are now booking All Inclusive ........ which is why Cruises and AI to places like the Red Sea, Canaries etc are so popular. A lot of people see AI as a way of keeping within their holiday budget.

    2. Kef has a lot of *returning* bookings and I suspect most of these would be prepared to pay a bit over the odds to go to Kef rather than elsewhere.

    3. A lot of first time visitors to Kef would probably find the island too quiet compared to what they are used to and not book again.

    4. The stunning beauty of the island is probably not an attraction for many tourists who prefer to *chill out* by the pool, or beach, and gorge themselves with food and drink rather than tour the island. (not a criticism - just a comment).

I fully agree with all Phil and cwm ddu say. I am looking for a cheap holiday to Kefalonia from Manchester on the 12th September for one week for four people, so if either of you or anyone else finds any on their searches now or nearer the time I would be very interested

Valid points made by Phil and Tony i agree, but unless you are able to sit it out and then grab a last minute departure then you have to bite the bullet and pay top whack!
If you are allocated your holiday a year in advance and it is at the tail end of June or over the peak period, the chances of falling on a last minute deal have to be fairly remote. However, take a trip in May, early June or September/October then i know for a fact there will be deals to be had....................unfortunately not usually from my airport!
Take that into account, any savings made by booking from Manchester are usually swallowed up in the cost of getting there!
