    Default Skiathos

    Hello everyone

I know there are a lot of Skiathos fans on here so thought I would ask a few questions.

I have looked up some info on Skiathos and think it looks lovely, it's so tiny! We like the look of Koukounaries, but what is there to actually do on the island?

My mum cannot sit out in the sun anymore, so we need more then just a sunworshipers holiday, we like to go out in the car and see places, nice churches and ruins etc. We enjoy driving around Kefalonia in the mountains and visitng all the sites, but it doesn't look like there is much to see in Skiathos for a 2 week holiday?

Is it right that you can do a day trip to Skopelos? How much would that cost?

The landing is a little worrying too, although I've seen the videos on youtube and don't think it looks as bad as I thought, plus I work at a flying school and asked one of the pilots about it and he said not to worry at all. But the holiday we have seen is through First Choice and their planes are larger then the average holiday plane so I was wondering if that would make a big difference? I would prefer to fly in a small plane. LOL.

Anyway any help would be great.

    Thanks

    Hollie

    Hi Hollie
We have been to Skiathos three times in recent years. Stayed at the Panorama at Koukounairies. Excellent hotel and as it is at the end of the island you can easily get a bus into town BUT can be a different story coming back. They run very frequently but as there is only one real road stretching the island and encompassing about 32 bus stops they can be crowded on the return leg. Each stop of the 32 represents a resort area. Obviously in the morning the trip in means you are first on but they get progressively full on the journey. Also in the early evening the trip into town means you may be sharing the bus with dozens of people who have come down to Koukounaries beach as it is very popular. The beach is good clean and safe and in the morning is peaceful but be aware that during the early afternoon many boat trips drop off visitors and they will eat up every inch of sand around you.
The Panorama is very good and the taverna with it serves very good meals. Residents of nearby hotels tend to come to it also in preference to their own.
Our first visit was for 2 weeks and we found the bus trips a novelty , the town is good and Koukounaries beach excellent. We went into town several nights and the food was good and the atmosphere relaxed. We did not hire a car as there did not seem anywhere to go and the bus was relaible. We went on the trip to Skopolos and saw the dolphins etc. Good trip .The other visits were for a week as we took my daughter and grandson as we knew it was safe , clean etc and a week is enough given that there is not that much to travel to or see etc when compared to Kef.That said enjoyed it and others may disagree with my summary .And yes the runway is SMALL.

Thanks very much for the info John, I really appreciate it. I think that confirms that it isn't an ideal place for us to go for 2 weeks. I like the sun, but my mum hates it as she had skin cancer 5 years ago, it's fine in Kefalonia as there seems to be a lot to do that doesn't involve lying on the beach or by a pool, and we spend a lot of the time travelling around or sitting in nice tavernas in the shade. Maybe it's a place for me to consider one day, but not for my mum.

Thank you though, it's good to know a bit about a place before you book.

Hmmm I did think about that Jed, is there a lot to see and do there? It's quite similar to Kef isn't it? Can you go over to Kef from Lefkas for a day or 2?

The other problem I am having is finding a company that doesn't penalise single people, as I would either like my own apartment or at least my own room. I'm too old to be sleeping on a camp bed in a studio with my parents. Not much fun for any of us!
