Question First visit to Kefalonia - Lourdas

    Hi,
My husband and I have booked a 2 week holiday to Lourdas for September this year with our girls aged 4 and 2, after booking and reading various different web-sites we are a bit concerned that we have picked the right destination.

I would be really grateful if you could answer some questons that I have to either put my mind at ease or we have the opportunity to change our destination before paying the balance of our holiday in a few weeks.

My main concern is the weather in Kefalonia in September, a few threads I have read suggest that it can be stormy and one even had 2 weeks very bad weather, I know we cannot guarantee the weather anywhere but the thought of 2 young children stuck in a villa isn't very appealing.

Is Lourdas a sandy beach suitable for children?

We are staying at the Kerkyra villa, does anyone know if this is a good location.

Thank you in advance for any advice that you can give me

    Tracey

    Hi Tracey
Welcome to the board. I have never stayed in Lourdas but I am sure other people will be along soon to give you more information about the villa you have booked. Lourdas is a hilly resort, but people keep going back year after year so that must give a good recommendation?

Regarding the beach. I would think it is an ideal safe and sandy beach for young children. Also, the sun should be a bit less fierce in September, which should be more comfortable for the kids.

Weather? - obviously this cannot be guaranteed. But, September is usually a bit cooler than July/August - but it should still be HOT.
The sea temperature also peaks in September so you get the best of both worlds.

If it does rain during your fortnight you might not even notice it - you might even welcome it!

I recommend you hire a car if you haven't got one included with the holiday. There is so much to see!!

    Hello.
I have stayed in Lourdas a number of times in September (normally the first two weeks).
We usually have lovely sunshine and the Temperature is in the High twenties and often into the low thirtys.
The weather in the last two weeks of the month can have the odd thunderstorm and rain, but the weather is still warm and usually sunny.
True you can get wet weather anywhere in september, I remember torrential rain in Crete, Turkey, Spain, Italy and France during September.

The beach in Lourdas gets very sandy away from the main area where it has some coarse sand mixed into it. There has been a machine down recently to clean the pebbles and any seagrass etc away.

The sea in september is lovely and warm and is fairly shallow until you wade out a bit. (we always swim in the Kanali or Trapezaki areas).
I believe the Kerkyra villa is near the Lara hotel a bit further along the road. It is not far to the seafront which is down hill and about 300 meters.
Lots of Tavernas not far away and as you are slightly up the hill it is less of a walk to more Tavernas in Vlachata (still classed as Lourdas by Tour operators).
So your villa is ideally placed for whichever direction you decide to spend the evening in.
    John :-)

    Hi Tracey,
welcome to the board. Dont worry Lourdas is a perfect destination for you & family. I have been going since 2003, the first time we went our daughter was 3&1/2 & in 2007 my son was 18months old. Trapezaki beach is much safer for kids, its very sandy & very shallow for a long way out. There is a great variety of tavernas & bars. Basically Lourdas is in three part, top, middle & bottom. The top strip has 10/11 tavernas & several bars all of which I would recommend. Then you have the middle section half way down the hill which is Lourdata village with several tavernas & bars again all really nice. After that you have the bottom which is the beautiful Lourdas bay with one of the largest beaches on Kefalonia it stretches for about 3miles from end to end. All along the beachfront you have a selection of tavernas & bars. I have been in them all & can honestly say have not had a bad meal yet. I think your villa is next to Lara Hotel (as Lampyland previously confirmed) which is near to both mid & bottom section.
Hope this has eleviated your fears
any more questions feel free to ask away
also check out this website http://www.lourdataholidays.co.uk this covers everything from the mid section to the beach.
